- Renzo du Plessis, raised in a Christian home, says his faith and family keep him grounded.
- He was named Currie Cup Player of the Season and earned a surprise Springboks camp call-up.
Renzo du Plessis is not just a name to watch — he’s already making waves as one of the brightest rising stars in South African rugby.
The 22-year-old forward, who plays for the Lions, has had a strong start to 2025. He was named the Currie Cup Player of the Season in March and also got a call to join the Springboks camp in Cape Town earlier that month.

Originally from Tzaneen, Du Plessis comes from a close-knit Christian family and was head boy at Ben Vorster High School — the same school attended by rugby star Trevor Nyakane and former Miss South Africa Ndavi Nokeri.
His rugby career started gaining momentum when he was selected for the Under-16 Grant Khomo team and later played in Craven Week. That’s when he began focusing seriously on rugby, after previously being involved in other sports.
In 2020, schoolofrugby.co.za spotlighted him as a strong player and a top contender to captain the SA Schools team.
Now a key part of the Lions forward pack, Du Plessis has impressed despite limited game time. His selection for the Springboks camp surprised many, as he had not consistently been in the starting line-up.
He still maintains a strong connection with his high school, sending messages to inspire current learners and thanking them for their continued support through the school’s Facebook page.
Off the field, he recently got married to Krizaan, who plays a big role in his support system. He is also already looking ahead to life after rugby, actively involved in business and property investment.

Du Plessis credits his success to his upbringing and the support of his family, especially his father Renso, his mother, and his three siblings.
