- South African singer Tyla will compete with the world’s biggest stars at next month’s Billboard Music Awards.
- The 22-year-old’s hit song Water has been played almost 900 million times on different music apps.
Globally acclaimed South African singing sensation Tyla’s awards collection shows no signs of slowing down.
She is set to add to her impressive list of accolades after scoring eight nominations for the 2024 Billboard Music Awards.
The 22-year-old star from Johannesburg, whose real name is Laura Seethal, will compete against the music world’s biggest names at the awards show in Los Angeles on 12 December.
Tyla is in the running for top prizes, including Best R&B Artist, Best Female R&B Artist, and Best Afrobeats Artist.
Her debut album is nominated for Best R&B Album, while her smash hit Water is up for Best R&B Song.
She also has three tracks vying for the Best Afrobeats Song award: Water, Truth or Dare, and Jump, a collaboration with artists Gunna and Skillibeng.
Tyla’s eight nominations match those of rappers Drake and Kendrick Lamar, and singers Post Malone and Teddy Swims.
It has been a massive year for the young South African star. She has already won awards at the MTV EMAs, Grammys, and MTV VMAs.
Her debut album is among the ten most-played albums by female singers on Spotify this year, and her hit song Water has been streamed nearly 900 million times.
Fans can catch Tyla performing in Cape Town and Pretoria this December. She will also debut her new song Tears in Johannesburg on 4 December at Coke Studios.
