South Africa’s very own Afropop Princess, Tyla, is making waves big enough to surf on, scoring her first-ever Grammy Award nomination.
The Grammy gods have spoken, and Tyla is on the list for the 65th Grammy Awards, all set to dazzle at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles come February 4, 2024.
This songbird from South Africa is strutting her stuff in the brand-spanking-new category of ‘Best African Music Performance.’
Taking to X Tyla could only muster a stunned ‘No Waysss’ in sheer excitement!
The Grammys have upped their game this year, adding fresh categories like Best Alternative Jazz Album and Best Pop Dance Recording.
Tyla’s track ‘Water’ has splashed onto the Billboard Hot 100, TikTok’s dance challenges, and into the hearts of fans worldwide.
‘Water’ is the first solo song by a South African artist to hit the charts since Hugh Masekela’s ‘Grazing in the Grass’ – that’s a leap of 55 years!
‘Water’ didn’t just flow gently down the stream. It roared to No. 1 in the U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart, dethroning Rema & Selena Gomez’s ‘Calm Down’ after a 58-week reign.
Spotify’s African folder shows Tyla as the first South African artist to snag 10 million monthly listeners.
