Two women have been arrested in East London for allegedly raping an 11-year-old boy who is known to them.
Police say the women, both from the Esinqawunqawini informal settlement, were taken into custody on Tuesday after the child’s mother reported the incident.
The mother said she took her son to the police station and then to hospital after he complained of pain and told her what had happened.
Regional National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Luxolo Tyali confirmed that the suspects appeared in the East London Magistrates Court on Thursday. The case has been postponed for a formal bail application.
Children’s rights activist Petros Majola called for the suspects to be denied bail.
“We want the state to treat cases like this with seriousness, regardless of who the accused are,” he said.
The boy is receiving treatment and counselling.
