Both the Zulu and Xhosa nations are mourning the death of AmaRharhabe Queen Noloyiso Sandile.
The 56-year-old queen was also the sister of Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini.
Family spokesperson Prince Xolile Burns-Ncamashe said the queen was being treated for a Covid-19 related illness at Cecilia Makiwane Hospital in East London, where she died on Wednesday afternoon.
Queen Noloyiso Sandile took over the reins when her husband King Maxhoba Sandile died in 2011.
