- Two men are shot dead at Ace Epakini in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, as customers run in panic while trying to escape flying bullets.
- In the chaos after the shooting, thieves steal meat and alcohol from cars while frightened patrons return to find their goods gone.
A night of drinking and dancing turns into terror when two men are shot dead at Ace, also called Epakini, on Spine Road in Khayelitsha.
Customers run in every direction as gunfire breaks out just after 4am on Monday.
Nangamso Mveni, 35, is walking to his car when he hears the shots.
He says he sprints away because he fears being hit by a stray bullet. “I prayed while I was running because I didn’t know where the gunshots came from,” says Mveni.
Another man at the bar says he hears the two who die had just arrived from Site C to buy meat. He says he does not know if the story is true, but worries that innocent people may get hurt. As people flee, thieves take advantage of the panic.
They raid parked cars, helping themselves to meat and alcohol. A witness says customers return only to find their food and booze gone.
Amanda Vikela, 39, says this is not the first shooting at the spot. She remembers a man being shot dead after approaching a woman and being confronted by her boyfriend.
Western Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg says Lingelethu West police open two murder cases. Twigg says officers find the men shot and paramedics confirm both are dead at the scene.
Constable Ndakhe Gwala says police arrest two suspects, aged 40 and 31. They will appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court once they are charged.
