- Two bystanders are shot dead when armed robbers open fire during a cash-in-transit heist in Dawn Park.
- Police arrest one suspect, recover a rifle, stained banknotes and two vehicles believed to be used in the robbery.
Two innocent bystanders were killed when armed robbers opened fire during a cash-in-transit heist in Dawn Park on Monday morning.
The drama started on Barry Marais Road when a silver Mercedes-Benz rammed into the back of a cash truck. The truck flipped and landed on top of a minibus taxi carrying seven people.
Gauteng provincial police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said five passengers were injured and treated, while two others escaped without harm.
Nevhuhulwi said about eight suspects then blew open the cash truck and fled with an unknown amount of money. “Gunfire broke out between the robbers and security guards who rushed to the scene. Two people caught in the crossfire were shot dead.
“Later in the day, Gauteng Highway Patrol officers and the Ekurhuleni Metro Police tracked down one of the suspects to a safe house in Rondebult,” she said.
She said imside, they found a rifle, five magazines filled with bullets, several stained banknotes and two cars – a silver Mercedes-Benz and a BMW – believed to be used in the robbery.
She said authorities are hunting for the other suspects.
The police have also urged the public not to run to robbery scenes or try to collect money blown from targeted cash vans.
Investigations are ongoing.
