  • He says actors are told there is no budget, yet others are paid well. He urges young actors to own their work.

Well known South African actor Hlomla Dandala has called out unfair pay in the local entertainment industry.

Dandala said on Facebook that for seven seasons he was the lead actor on a show, but a white supporting co-star earned more than him.

“Imagine finding out that, in a show you were the #1 lead on for 7 seasons, the (only white) supporting lead was getting paid more than you,” he wrote.

Speaking to Scrolla, Dandala said: “It’s upsetting to be told the budget doesn’t permit a decent salary and then discover that others can be paid decently.”

He said that while he does not have proof, he believes racism is at play. “A pattern seems to suggest this,” he said.

Dandala, who has starred in shows like Isidingo, Jacob’s Cross and Scandal!, also gave advice to young actors.

“Ownership. Aim to own your image and the work you put out there. Technology today allows for this,” he said.
