For villagers in Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Limpopo, the festive season is not really festive until they see their neighbours moving from village to village dressed in kilts or uniforms and showing off some fancy footwork.
The Trupa Carnival, where groups showcase their singing and dancing skills, is a lifetime tradition that was formed to keep villagers entertained and occupied during the festive season.
During the peak of the season, participants dressed in military uniforms, armed with toy guns – the origin of “trupa” is “troop” – can be seen marching through the streets displaying their singing, dancing and choreographic talents, with residents donating small funds to show their appreciation.
On the last day of the festivities, on 2 January, the groups converge at a central location where they compete for the crown.
On Tuesday, 30 groups from four provinces converged in Marapyane, Mpumalanga to battle it out to be crowned as champions.
Speaking to Scrolla.Africa, event organiser Kgosi Motsene said Trupa is part of their heritage and they are keeping the tradition alive for the next generations.
“We grew up seeing our parents being part of the Trupa groups and once we were old enough to sing and dance we were absorbed into the groups.
“Through this initiative we know young people are kept occupied during the festive season, away from criminal activities and other social ills,” he said.
The top three winners receive a trophy and monetary award.
Pensioner Mathapelo Motsegi, now 70, has been part of the Scouts since her teenage years and said she will only retire from the Scouts when her feet fail to carry her.
“I believe I have remained fit over the years due to the regular Trupa practices and exercises. I don’t have a chronic illness or struggle with my weight because I keep fit.
“It is not odd to find pensioners as part of the groups. We are passionate about the sport and by being part of them we are ensuring the legacy is transferred from one generation to the other,” she said.
