US President Donald Trump says America should take control of Gaza and move its people to other countries.
Trump wants the US to own the Gaza Strip and says he would turn the war-torn area into a place the Middle East “can be very proud of”.
“The US will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it, too. We’ll own it and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site,” said Trump in a briefing with Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
He called Gaza a “demolition site” and said Palestinians should live somewhere else “in peace and harmony”.
“If it’s necessary, we’re going to take over that piece, we’re going to develop it, create thousands and thousands of jobs, and it’ll be something that the entire Middle East can be very proud of,” Trump said.
The President thinks Gaza’s two million Palestinian residents should move to nearby countries like Jordan and Egypt.
“The only reason the Palestinians want to go back to Gaza is they have no alternative,” he said.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio backed Trump’s idea, saying: “The United States stands ready to lead and Make Gaza Beautiful Again. Our pursuit is one of lasting peace in the region for all people.”
Trump’s plan matches what some right-wing Israeli politicians want, but it goes against former President Joe Biden’s promise to stop Palestinians from being forced out of their homes.
