Trump calls churches “essential services”

Donald Trump has tried to boost his popularity by ordering churches to open this weekend.

Trump called churches “essential services”, ignoring federal government advice to keep them closed. He said he would overrule state governors who wanted to keep churches closed (Trump doesn’t have the power to do this).

The US has had 96,370 coronavirus deaths, knocking Trump’s popularity ahead of the November election.

Most American evangelicals voted for Trump in the 2016 election.
