The provincial SAPS Serious and Violent Crimes Unit is investigating a triple murder after a shooting in Khayelitsha Island’s Site C informal settlement in Cape Town left three people dead.

Western Cape police spokesperson Colonel Andre Traut reported that the victims – a 26-year-old man and two women in their twenties – were shot on Sunday evening around 8.20pm.

“Police responded to a murder complaint and discovered the body of a 26-year-old male in a passage with a gunshot wound,” said Traut.

“The two women, also shot, were found in a nearby shack.”

Traut said the motive for the murder was not yet known.

Resident Sibongile Mdingana heard the gunshots and immediately worried that a murder had taken place.

“We are not shocked anymore. People are killed like flies. It is confusing because we don’t know if they are killed for their sins or if they just got caught in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Mdingana said.

“It is not only our area experiencing high crime but the whole of Cape Town. People are getting killed every day. I feel helpless to stop the rising crime. We don’t know if we will get to 2025. As things stand, anyone can get killed anywhere.”

Another resident, who preferred to stay anonymous, said: “Many innocent victims lose their lives because of their friends. Someone will be friends with someone who collects money from business people. Those who are collecting money fight all the time. When you are found with them, you get shot even if you are not part of those collecting money.”

He warned locals to be careful about their associations.

Police have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or use the My SAPS app to report anonymously.
