January can’t come soon enough for several big name players who will be looking for a move away, writes Menzi Magubane.
Forget fireworks and resolutions. The new year means one thing to football fanatics: the January transfer window will be open and teams will be allowed to sign new players.
Several players will be hoping to at least get contracts with DStv Premiership teams, if not ones from overseas.
The likes of Samir Nurkovic, Siphelele Mthembu, Philani Zulu and Daniel Akpeyi — all former Kaizer Chiefs players — are yet to kick the ball this season after they were released.
In January their agents will be busy trying to get their clients new homes.
Former Orlando Pirates captain Happy Jele is a big name player that has been unlucky not to find a new club since leaving the Buccaneers at the end of last season.
Jele has been linked with Royal AM but his huge salary demand was a stumbling block. However if he lowers his demands, we could still see him doing what he loves best before the current season comes to an end in May.
All these players and others can still offer so much to South African football and their fans would surely be happy to see them back in action.
Football fans will also be expecting to see new faces in their respective clubs that will help them to challenge for the league honours or the Nedbank Cup.
The transfer window also gives the clubs an opportunity to renew contracts of those players that are playing their last season with them.
Clubs will definitely be busy in January and the current season will be back from the Fifa World Cup break.
