Top Cogta officials suspended over pre-election corruption

KwaZulu-Natal’s Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) has suspended five top officials.

This comes as part of what seems to be a wider crackdown on corruption in the province.

The department said on Friday that those suspended include the Chief Financial Officer, the Director for Supply Chain Management, and two other senior directors.

While the exact allegations weren’t shared, the department said they relate to wrongdoing allegedly done before the May 29 general elections.

The officials’ names weren’t made public.

“The officials are suspended due to allegations of financial misconduct that occurred in the run-up to the May 2024 elections.

“The suspensions send a strong message in restoring a culture of good governance and consequence management in the department,” said Cogta MEC, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi.

Earlier this month, the provincial public works and infrastructure department also suspended three senior officials over corruption claims.

These were Musa Zondi (supply chain management director), Zanele Dlamini (chief financial officer), and Z. Pfute (acting deputy director-general for infrastructure management and technical services).

This followed the earlier suspension of department head Siboniso Majola, also for unspecified corruption allegations.
