Asanda Yeko, a mother from the Strand, near Cape Town, believes that her kidnapped baby is still alive despite being missing for almost three months.

This week, Western Cape police released an identikit of the suspected kidnapper.

Baby Ivakele Yeko was abducted on 5 December 2022.The kidnapper allegedly offered to look after the baby and the nanny’s daughter while the nanny went into a shop.

When the nanny returned, the suspect had disappeared with baby Yeko and the nanny’s daughter.

Months later, Yeko still has a lot of questions about her son’s disappearance. Following the kidnapping incident, the suspect allegedly drove from Somerset West to the Strand to drop the nanny’s daughter next to her house.

“Her seven year-old-daughter was found near her house but my baby was nowhere to be found,” she said.

The nanny’s daughter said she does not  know the kidnapper.

‘My son is still alive’

Yeko is pleading with the public to assist in the search for her son..

“I feel it in my body — my son is still alive,” she said.

Her son’s kidnapping has completely changed her life.

“I haven’t been able to eat or sleep properly ever since the day he went missing,” the mother told Scrolla.Africa.

Community members continue to sympathise with Yeko.

“No parent is meant to go through what she’s going through, and the worst part is that this was caused by a woman. How can we be so cruel to each other? We’re supposed to help each other,”  said Lindelwa Tiki, a community member.

Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Captain Nowonga Sukwana said attempts had been made to find the missing baby since December 2022, but they have been unsuccessful.

“Police are appealing to anyone with the information that could assist with the safe return of the baby, and the arrest of the woman, to contact the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Asanda Hlana,” Sukwana said.

Yeko is still hoping for the safe return of her baby.

“Please bring my baby back, I am not coping, and depending on sleeping tablets,” she said.
