Five-month-old baby Ivakele Yeko has been kidnapped after his nanny left him with an unknown woman to go and buy food on Monday.
It’s alleged that the stranger offered to look after the baby and the nanny’s six-year-old daughter while the nanny went into a shop.
The incident took place in Somerset West in the Western Cape.
The mother, Asanda Yeko, 22, told Scrolla.Africa that she has been having sleepless nights since her baby was stolen.
“Not knowing if my son is still alive or dead stresses me.”
She said the nanny told her that she was waiting for her boyfriend outside the store when a woman approached her. The nanny spoke with the suspect, and in their conversation, she mentioned that she wanted to buy fish and chips.
The suspect offered to look after the baby while the nanny went into the shops.
“We are talking about a five-month-old baby here. Who in their right mind can easily hand over a baby to a stranger while we all know that kids get stolen? Why was it so easy for her to give away my child to someone she doesn’t know?” asked the furious mother.
Yeko said she suspects the nanny knows more than what she told her and the police.
The nanny didn’t tell Yeko about the baby being missing until she was back from work around 6pm.
“I was going to my nanny’s house when a group of people from the tavern stopped me. They were comforting me and saying I will find my son alive, and they are praying for me.”
The suspect allegedly dropped the nanny’s six-year-old next to her house in Strand, where the mother and the nanny both stay.
“If the woman doesn’t know the nanny, how did she know her address? She could’ve run away with both kids if she was a stranger.”
Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that a case of a kidnapping is being investigated.
