Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund became the final two sides to qualify for the quarter finals of the Uefa Champions League.

Despite a 1-0 home win in the first leg, last season’s finalists Inter Milan lost their tie in Madrid on penalties after Atletico defeated them 2-1 on the night.

Goals from Antoine Griezmann and Memphis Depay followed Federico Dimarco’s opener to send the tie the distance.

After no penalty shootout in the competition since 2016, two games in two days had now gone all the way — and on both occasions, the hosts would come out on top.

Jan Oblak saved two spot kicks as Lautaro Martinez blazed his over the bar to continue Inter’s bad run against Spanish sides in the competition.

The Italians are now winless in their last 11 away games against Spanish opposition, drawing three and losing eight.

In the other game, Dortmund overcame PSV 2-0 courtesy of goals from Jadon Sancho and Marco Reus to win the tie 3-1 on aggregate.

Sancho’s finish means he now has four goals and 3 assists in his last seven Champions League home games for Dortmund.

The draw for the quarter finals takes place on Friday.
