The family of slain rapper Kiernan AKA Forbes is convinced that his real enemy who put a price on his head is still out there.
AKA’s father Tony Forbes told the media that the true mastermind behind the murders of AKA and chef Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane is still a free man.
“I don’t think that the [KZN] provincial commissioner [Lt Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi] really meant the true mastermind, I think he was referring to the coordinator.
“And so the coordinator, if I understand things correctly, received a sum of money and shared it with six other people.
“Where did that money come from? If it came through the banking system then the police should be able to pick up the trail and find out where it came from and continue the investigation there,” he said.
Forbes, who arrived at the Durban court protected by bodyguards, said his gut feeling was that none of the seven suspects were the true mastermind behind the contract killing.
“But I have not done the investigation, I am speculating.”
Earlier Forbes appealed to the court not to allow the suspects to cover their faces in court.
All the accused, who are also wanted for numerous taxi violence and political killings in KwaZulu-Natal, said they feared for their lives.
“This is all new to me but the concept of appearing in court is that you are appearing in front of the people but you are hiding behind masks. It’s … something I don’t understand why it is allowed.
“I understand it’s part of the Covid-19 [regulations] but when you are in court, to be able to hide behind the masks is something the justice system needs to look at,” said Forbes.
AKA and Tibz were killed on 10 February 2023 outside the Wish Restaurant on Durban’s famous nightlife strip of Florida Road in the leafy suburb of Morningside.
Five men appeared briefly at the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Thursday accused of killing the famous rapper and the case was postponed to 6 March for bail application.
Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni told a post-cabinet briefing that South African authorities had begun the process of extraditing two other suspects from Eswatini.
