NFP and IFP candidates who died before the elections have won highly contested wards in Nongoma Local Municipality in the Zululand District.
The late NFP ward 17 candidate, Dumisani Qwabe, won with an outright majority in all four voting districts of his ward. His funeral is expected to take place this coming weekend.
Qwabe was shot on 26 October and his vehicle was set alight on the R66 between Pongola and Nongoma.
After the counting of the elections on Monday night, he was declared the winner.
These elections have brought back the NFP to KZN politics with a bang. The party managed to even take back the ANC Dumbe local municipality in PaulPietersburg.
Meanwhile in ward 20 in Nongoma the IFP late candidate Zamani Sibiya, who died after an illness before the elections, also won his ward.
Sibiya was one of the popular IFP candidates in Nongoma and was laid to rest last week.
These two wards are now expected to hold by-elections after the passing of Sibiya and Qwabe.
