Nkululeko “The Bulldog” Mhlongo has decided to retire from professional boxing after a 19-year career.
A two-time South African and WBF champ, the KZN-born Gauteng-based boxer sat down with his family and longtime promoter, Lebo Mahoko of Dream Team Promotions, and made the decision.
Mhlongo’s last fight was in April, where he lost his SA middleweight title to John Bopape in Mangaung, Bloemfontein. Bopape’s thunderous right hand dropped Mhlongo in the 11th round, leading to his retirement decision.
Mhlongo’s boxing career saw him clinch the South African title in the junior middleweight division. He added the WBF Intercontinental and WBA Pan African in the same division.
In his long career, he fought formidable opponents such as Isaac Hlatshwayo, Page Tshesane, Sikhulule Sidzumo, Brandon Thysse and Emmany Kalombo.
“I’m done with boxing. My body and my head have taken hard punishment but I’m glad I inflicted pain on others as well for many years,” said Mhlongo, who leaves the sport with fond memories.
“This sport enabled me to buy a house for my family and I travelled the world through my talent.”
He said he still felt he was hard done by in countries like Russia, Kazakhstan, Germany and Brazil.
The 44-year-old former champ said he won’t be lost to the sport.
“I want to use my extensive knowledge to nurture upcoming champions,” he said.
Boxing enthusiasts will remember Mhlongo for his unique technique of fighting with one hand while hiding the other behind his back which he did when he realised he was cruising to an easy victory.
Mahoko praised his fighter for dedication and his contribution to the sport.
“We are sad to see him go, but we are grateful for what he has given to boxing. He will always be a part of our family, and we wish him all the best in his future endeavours,” said Mahoko.
