Ever a fan of a Twitter poll (even when bots participate in them), billionaire Elon Musk may not be so proud of his latest one.
In a poll he himself posted on Sunday night, more than 10 million people have voted in favour of him stepping down as the boss of Twitter following his disastrous start in charge of the social media site.
When he made the poll, Musk promised his followers that he would honour its results. As the poll closed on Monday, 57.5% said he should step down.
After the poll conclusively told the erratic entrepreneur to get lost, he came out insisting that there is no successor waiting in the wings to take over.
Musk tweeted: “No one wants the job who can actually keep Twitter alive.”
He also replied to another user who said they can do a much better job than he is doing so far.
He hit back saying: “You must like pain a lot. One catch: you have to invest your life savings in Twitter.”
According to Forbes, Musk lost his status as the world’s richest person last month to Bernard Arnault and his family. He told the Twitter user that since his acquisition of the site, he has been on a fast lane to bankruptcy. “Still want the job?” he asked.
A decision to ban an account which tracked the location of his private jet last week was followed by a mass suspension of journalists who reported on the ban.
Musk’s silencing of the journalists has been met with widespread condemnation.
Musk has a history of using Twitter polls to rubber-stamp major decisions, selling a tenth of his Tesla holdings after one poll in 2021, restoring Donald Trump’s account after a second last month and reinstating a swath of suspended accounts following a third.
“Vox Populi, Vox Dei,” Musk tweeted after the Trump poll.
