Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has paid tribute to Bafana Bafana legend Benni McCarthy, who has resigned as the club’s forwards coach after two seasons.
Assistant manager Mitchell van der Gaag is also leaving Old Trafford to become a head coach for another team.
“Mitchell has decided that now is the right time for him to pursue his own ambitions in a number one position,” Ten Hag told the Manchester United website.
“I want to pay tribute to his fantastic service over the past two years and also to Benni for his important contributions. We send them our thanks and best wishes for the future.”
McCarthy’s departure comes as he also wants to become a manager.
Whether he will stay in Europe or return to the PSL remains to be seen.
Ten Hag has added Rene Hake and club legend Ruud van Nistelrooy to his technical team.
“I am delighted that Rene and Ruud have agreed to join our project, adding a wealth of experience, knowledge, and new energy to the staff,” Ten Hag said.
“Now is a good time to refresh the coaching team as we look to build on the achievements of the past two years and push to the next level.”
The new coaching staff aims to help Manchester United win the Premier League for the first time since the 2012-13 season.
