- Two teenagers have been arrested for the murder of Gqeberha police officer Constable Callan Andrews.
- A peaceful march will be held to honour Constable Andrews, as police continue investigating his killing.
Two teenagers, aged 17 and 18, were arrested on Thursday, by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit in Gqeberha.
They are accused of killing Police Constable Callan Andrews and stealing his service pistol on New Year’s Eve in Helenvale.
Constable Andrews, 29, was based at Gelvandale Police Station. He was attacked while on duty in Voisen Road, Katanga, on 31 December 2024.
According to the Hawks, the suspects took his gun and fatally shot him. He was rushed to hospital but died shortly after.
Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana said the arrests were made after an intelligence-driven investigation.
“More arrests are imminent as the investigation continues,” said Mhlakuvana.
The suspects will appear in the Gelvandale Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 6 January.
Hawks’ Acting Provincial Head, Brigadier Fernando Luis, praised the investigators and thanked the community for their support.
“This collaboration marks a milestone in the fight against crime,” he said.
Meanwhile, a peaceful march for Constable Andrews is expected to take place on Sunday, 5 January. Organisers have asked attendees to wear black shirts and bring light blue balloons, which will be released at the crime scene. The march starts at 3pm at Gelvandale Police Station, with parking available at Christ the King Church.
