The killing of a grade 10 learner by a farmer has sparked fear in the community of the rural town Glencoe in KwaZulu-Natal.
Last week Qiniso Dlamini,17, was shot and killed allegedly by a farmer after they had an altercation over the teenager’s family cattle that had trespassed into the Simpson family farm.
Qiniso went to the Simpson farm with his friends where they asked for their cattle to be released.
His older brother Lindokuhle Dlamini said that after killing Qiniso, the suspect also tried to shoot a community member, who was at the farm to help get the Dlamini cattle.
The man managed to disarm the farmer and took the gun to the local police station.
“As the family and the community of Glencoe we are scared that if he manages to get bail, he will come and finish what he started,” said Dlamini.
“So far we are happy with the way our police managed to arrest him and he is still behind bars.”
He said the situation was very tense and the whole community of Glencoe was angry.
Dlamini added his family had high expectations for his younger brother and that the family was not coping with his death.
“We wanted him to be something big in life. Unfortunately his life was cut short. This is really painful and we don’t know if we will ever forget what the farmer did to us. All we want now is for justice to take its course,” he said.
KZN police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said a 68-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with murder.
“He will appear before the Glencoe Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday,” she said.
