A Nigerian teenager is in police cells for allegedly impregnating 10 women as part of a scheme to raise money through the sale of children.
The 17-year-old boy has been arrested by police in Rivers State alongside his alleged accomplice, Chigozie Ogbonna, a 29-year-old man.
The two males were reportedly running a “baby factory” together with two women, identified as Favour Bright, 30 and Peace Alikoi, 40.
Rivers Police Public Relations Officer Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident and said in a statement that police on Saturday, 7 January, raided the baby factory after receiving credible information.
At the two houses, police found the pregnant women, whom they described as victims of child trafficking.
Police alleged that investigations found that when a victim delivered her baby, the syndicate leader kept the child and paid the mother a sum of N500,000 (about R20) and that some of the babies who had been delivered in the houses had been sold.
“All the victims confessed that they were lured to participate in the illicit sale of children because of the need to meet financial challenges. A white Honda Pilot Jeep was recovered from the syndicate leader.”
