The community of Mokomene in Ga-Thoka village, Limpopo has launched a manhunt for the people who killed and dismembered 18-year-old Modjadji Thoka.
The teenager’s body was found decomposed in an abandoned house on Monday with her head, breast, and legs missing.
She was last seen alive on Friday night when she told her mother she was going to the local tuck shop to buy airtime.
Speaking to Scrolla.Africa, the deceased’s mother, Ntseta Thoka, said she was not worried when her daughter didn’t come home on Friday night because she assumed she was sleeping over at her relative’s home nearby, as she often does.
“On Sunday morning I called her but her phone was off. I decided to go and check up on her but I was shocked when the family told me that they had not seen her in days.
“While on my way to the police station to report her missing, one of her siblings came running to inform me that her sister was dead.”
A member of the community found Modjadji’s body and called neighbours, and when Modjadji’s sibling, who came with the group, spotted a pair of shoes, she recognised them as belonging to her sister.
Ntseta went to the abandoned house where her late daughter’s body was found and identified her body.
“It will take me a lifetime to forget the condition of my daughter’s body when I found her. I was able to identify her by her toes, her jacket and the shoes she was wearing that night,” she said.
The grieving mother’s wish is to have a conversation with her daughter’s killers.
“Why did they put her through such pain? What did she do to deserve so much pain? What are they going to do with my daughter’s body parts?” asked the distraught mother.
“I am pleading with the police to follow up all the leads until the suspects are arrested and removed from the community before they strike again.”
The South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) regional chairperson, Sehlare Matshabaphala, urged residents to work together to locate the criminals.
“In our gossip chats let us discuss the last people we saw with Modjadji, the car she was seen getting into and the people she was seen talking to that night. All that information will help to identify the suspects,” he said.
Police spokesperson in Limpopo Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed that they are investigating a case of murder.
