A teenager in Libode, Eastern Cape, is taking matters into his own hands instead of waiting for a job.
Avela Mthembu, 19, recently launched a business that offers artificial intelligence solutions to local businesses. His aim is to reduce paperwork, cut admin and save owners time and money.
Mthembu started learning about artificial intelligence in June 2024. After finishing high school, he turned those skills into a business, which he officially launched about a month ago.
He says many local businesses either struggle with manual admin or pay too much for international software that does not fit their needs. His focus is on simple systems built locally and priced for the local market.
Mthembu works alone for now. He goes door to door explaining his services and takes orders from people who contact him directly. He has not employed anyone yet but plans to hire when the business grows.
He started the business using money he saved during high school. His mother and his pastor, Mgcotyelwa, also helped him with cash to get going.
Mthembu says he started the business because artificial intelligence is changing the world fast. He believes many people and businesses are not ready and risk being left behind.
“Adapting early is about survival,” he says.
Although the business is still new and not earning much yet, Mthembu wants South Africa to thrive in the artificial intelligence era. He plans to focus on educating businesses as the work grows.
For Mthembu, starting small is part of building something future proof.
