- SANTACO says it does not support drivers who stop private cars and demand money or take the vehicles.
- A social media post falsely claimed taxi bosses will impound private cars giving free lifts to others.
The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) says it is not behind the recent reports of taxi drivers stopping private cars, asking for money, and taking the vehicles.
This comes after a message on social media claimed that SANTACO would start impounding private cars. The message said giving free lifts to friends or family picked up on the street is now banned because it affects taxi drivers’ business.
SANTACO says these claims are false and go against what the taxi council stands for.
“We strongly discourage the public from taking such unfounded reports seriously.
“We categorically distance the organisation from the false information circulated on social media platforms.
“We condemn the unlawful actions of individuals allegedly stopping vehicles and extorting money from private motorists under the guise of representing the taxi industry,” said spokesperson Rebecca Phala.
She said SANTACO is focused on providing safe and legal transport to South Africans.
“We urge the public to stop spreading false stories that cause fear and hurt the industry. Lies like this mislead people and make it harder for us to improve the taxi service,” she said.
SANTACO told the public to report any cases of harassment or threats on the road to the police.
Anyone who wants to raise a complaint with the taxi industry can contact the national office on 012 321 1043.
“SANTACO denounces all forms of violence in the strongest possible terms and remains committed to working with law enforcement and the public to uphold peace, safety, and accountability within the sector.”
