The DA has once again elected a top leadership of white males to lead it towards the 2024 national general election. This comes after the party was heavily criticised for a largely white leadership elected at its national congress.
The exodus of prominent black leaders from the DA in KwaZulu-Natal has left the party with a provincial structure dominated mainly by white men.
At its provincial congress held at the Durban ICC over the weekend, three white males were elected to top leadership positions.
Francois Rodgers was re-elected as DA provincial leader, Dean McPherson as chairperson of the DA in KZN and Martin Meyer was elected as the first deputy chair of the provincial structure.
The dominance of white males started after the departure of black leaders like Sizwe Mchunu, Zwakele Mncwango, Mbali Ntuli, Makhosazana Mdlalose and others.
On Saturday the Congress attended by 500 delegates saw the election of white males to lead the party towards the 2024 elections in a province that is deeply traditionalist and rural.
Newly elected deputy leader, the only black male in the structure, Sthembise Ngema said that since Rodgers has taken over as leader, the party in the province has grown tremendously.
“Actually we are growing and as testimony to that, we are winning by-elections everywhere in KZN. People in townships and rural areas are welcoming the DA with amazing support,” he said.
