The Joburg Super Kings qualified for the playoffs of the Betway SA20 in remarkable fashion at the Wanderers on Saturday.
The houseful Bullring witnessed a thrilling evening of T20 cricket as Faf du Plessis and Leus du Plooy guided their side to the playoffs, against all odds.
After electing to bowl first, the hosts watched Wiaan Mulder (59) and JJ Smuts (55) help log leaders Durban Super Giants to a score of 203/6 in their 20 overs.
The uphill battle was made easier by the fact that the Pretoria Capitals had beaten MI Cape Town in the earlier game — meaning that if Joburg could successfully complete the run chase, they would stake claim to the last available playoff spot.
And the Wanderers was ready.
The capacity crowd ensured that the Bullring was seeped in a sea of yellow, with every ball being cheered on.
Skipper du Plessis and his opening partner du Plooy both scored 57 runs each to set the platform for Wayne Madsen and Moeen Ali in the middle order.
With 13 to get off the last over, it would be Donovan Ferreira that would step up.
The 25-year-old finished with a maximum to seal the seven wicket win and set-up a home eliminator against the Paarl Royals on Wednesday.
Durban will take on Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the first qualifier at Newlands on Tuesday, with the winners of that match advancing directly to the final.
