Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rhulani Mokwena is set to step down from his role less than a year after signing a new deal.
According to SABC Sport, Mokwena’s fractured relations with sporting director Flemming Berg have led the coach to walk out of his contract at the club.
Berg, who formerly worked as an international scout at Chelsea, joined the Brazilians in April 2022 while Mokwena was co-coach alongside Manqoba Mngqithi.
Mokwena’s vision when it comes to the transfer market is reportedly not aligned with Berg’s, who spearheads that department.
SABC Sport added that Mokwena was not present at Chloorkop when players returned for pre-season on Monday. However, his departure is yet to be officially announced by the club.
Sources close to the club have said that it is imminent, though, with settlement terms currently being discussed.
“He is definitely going,” a source close to the club said per SowetanLive.
“At the moment it’s about agreeing termination terms. He has not submitted a letter of resignation but he’s told the club of his wish to depart.”
“He didn’t go [to training] because he told the club he wants to leave. So, his agent must meet the club to finalise the separation, and what compensation should be paid, because he’s still under contract.”
