Mamelodi Sundowns have advanced to the Carling Knockout final, where they’ll take on surprise contenders Magesi FC, after a 2-0 semi-final win over Marumo Gallants at Dr. Petrus Molemela Stadium on Sunday.
Lucas Ribeiro Costa put Sundowns in front with a penalty eight minutes into the second half, and Neo Maema secured the victory with a goal in stoppage time.
The Brazilians are now eyeing their first trophy of the season in a showdown against Premier Soccer League newcomers Magesi at Toyota Stadium on November 23.
In a match where rain initially threatened play, Gallants—nicknamed Bahlabane ba Ntwa—had the upper hand in the first half. However, Sundowns’ experience shone through after the break.
Gallants captain Edgar Manaka returned from suspension, replacing Phathutshedzo Nange, while Kenneth Nthatheni made his season debut in midfield.
Meanwhile, Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi stuck with the lineup that defeated Kaizer Chiefs 4-0 in the quarter-finals, with only Ronwen Williams and Peter Shalulile retained from their recent league victory over Polokwane City.
Early in the game, Williams had to make crucial saves, including a diving stop against a powerful shot from Daniel Msendami and another quick punch to deflect a corner kick.
Sundowns broke through when Gallants’ Marvin Sikhosana committed a handball in the box, allowing Ribeiro to slot in a penalty past Washington Arubi.
Gallants’ Thapelo Dhludhlu tried to equalize, but Williams denied him in a one-on-one situation.
In the final moments, Kobamelo Kodisang nearly scored for Sundowns with a curling shot that went just wide, before substitute Maema’s left-footed strike—set up by Kutlwano Letlhaku—sealed the win as the ball ricocheted off the post and into the net.
