Mamelodi Sundowns players are under stern scrutiny to see if they can steer Bafana Bafana to Africa Cup of Nations glory in Ivory Coast.
The Brazilians have contributed 10 players to the South Africa squad trying to find a way out of Group E. Bafana Bafana must get past Mali, Tunisia and neighbours Namibia.
Having established themselves as one of the most feared sides in inter-club competitions on the continent, Sundowns are expected to be Bafana’s backbone.
Over the years, their players have gained experience from the CAF Champions League and the African Football League which they won last year.
Masandawana midfielder Khuliso Mudau insists Bafana have the quality in their squad; and playing in continental club competition will help them navigate their way out of Group E.
“It won’t be an easy group to get out of, but I think we have quality in the squad with players who are young and hungry,” said Mudau as per CAFOnline.
“We want to make sure that we write history together. I think it will help us a lot to have players who play in the Champions League.”
“You can’t compare it with the local league because the intensity is not the same. So I think it’s going to help us a lot.”
“We have been playing together for quite a while now as a team and I am just grateful to be here and want to showcase my talent.”
Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams leads a cast of Sundowns players who are at Afcon including Mothobi Mvala, Themba Zwane, Grant Kekana, Aubrey Modiba, Thapelo Maseko, Thapelo Morena and Terrence Mashego.
While Sundowns dominate the Bafana squad, no single Kaizer Chiefs player was selected by coach Hugo Broos, a first in the history of South Africa at a major tournament.
