Gerda Steyn won her fifth consecutive Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon race, breaking her own record for the third time by over two minutes at the University of Cape Town on Saturday.
Steyn won the race in a time of 3:26:54, beating the the previous record of 3:29:06 which she set last year.
Runner-up Irvette van Zyl came in over two minutes later while Zimbabwe’s Loveness Madziva came in third, eleven minutes later than the champion.
Steyn kept the momentum as she stayed in front for the majority of proceedings before really accelerating to widen the gap from the 40 kilometre mark onwards.
“I had a plan set out in my mind coming into the race, but in the later stages of the race I didn’t focus on the time and the clock so much. It was all about just getting to the finish line, which is always the first goal,” Steyn said post-race.
“I didn’t know exactly how big a lead I had, but I had a fair idea that I was ahead of my previous best time, so it was a real bonus when I stepped on the grass at the finish and saw it still showed 3:26 on the clock.”
Maiden winner Onalenna Khonkhobe was placed first in the men’s race, with his time of 3:09:30.
His Nedbank teammate Lloyd Bosman came in second place, split seconds behind, while Givemore Mudzinganyama was third with a time of 3:11:13.
