South Africa turns to the ICJ after Gaza attacks

South Africa made an urgent appeal to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), calling for intervention against Israel’s military actions in Gaza, particularly in Rafah, the last refuge for Gaza’s surviving population.

This request follows Israel’s announcement of extending its military operations, which has brought international criticism of the use of excessive force.

Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya stressed the seriousness of the situation, emphasising the potential breach of Palestinian rights in Gaza due to Israel’s aggressive tactics.

International figures, including British Foreign Secretary David Cameron and US President Joe Biden, have criticised Israel’s actions.

Despite these calls, political dynamics at the UN Security Council have seen the British government abstain from condemning the war, while the US has used its veto power against actions targeting Israel.

South Africa, a longstanding advocate for Palestine, previously secured a favourable ruling from the ICJ, ruling that Israel’s conduct in Gaza could be considered genocide.
