Guinean soldiers say they have ousted President Alpha Condé and taken over the west African country.
Special forces soldiers told the country they had dissolved its government and constitution, and closed all borders.
An unverified video of Condé surrounded by soldiers circulated on social media.
After gunshots were heard in the capital on Sunday morning, the government claimed the coup had been stopped.
The army unit’s head Mamady Doumbouya said “poverty and endemic corruption” had forced the move.
“We are going to rewrite a constitution together,” he said.
Against a backdrop of widespread poverty, Condé triggered a new political crisis last October when he won a third term in office, after changing the constitution to allow him to stand again.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he strongly condémned “any takeover of the government by force” and called for Condé’s immediate release.
