Soccer wives to spend millions on safety at Euro 2024

Wives and girlfriends (Wags) of the England national team are set to spend millions on private security at the European Championships in Germany in June.

According to multiple reports, the players’ partners will spend £100,000 (R2-million) on bodyguards.

The decision comes after Germany’s interior minister, Nancy Faeser, issued a warning about terrorist threats that will see border controls introduced “to prevent possible perpetrators of violence from entering the country”.

The threat has increased following an attack by Islamic State killers on the Crocus City Hall entertainment complex in Moscow, Russia, last week in which more than 130 people were killed and hundreds more injured.

England’s Wags, led by Fern Maguire and Megan Pickford, will split the costs, with Jack Grealish’s girlfriend Sasha Attwood and Buyako Saka’s partner Tolami Benson keen to hire ex-military specialists rather than the FA’s security team.

The UK government has committed to working with German authorities to create a safe environment at the major tournament.

“Football fans all over the country will be looking forward to a summer of football. We are working with the German police to support a safe and trouble-free tournament,” a government spokesperson said, according to the Daily Mail.

“A UK police delegation will be deployed to Germany during the event and we will also be offering support and advice on how to engage with fans attending from the UK.”
