Soccer star surrenders to police after fatal crash

Police have confirmed that the soccer star who fled the scene of an accident in Tembisa at around 7.30 on Wednesday morning in which a nine-year-old girl died is Shaune Mogaila.

Mogaila, who plays for Sekhukhune United, handed himself over to the Rabie Ridge police hours after being involved in the fatal head-on collision along Andrew Mapheto Drive.

The club manager accompanied the talented winger to the police station.

The mother of the nine-year-old girl and her 13-year-old daughter, who were trapped in their vehicle, were rescued. The 13-year-old sustained serious injuries and was taken to Tembisa Tertiary Hospital.

Scrolla.Africa learnt that Mogaila left the scene to go to a doctor for a check-up before handing himself over to the authorities.

Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department spokesperson Thabiso Makgato said when police arrived at the scene, they found the mother and her 13-year-old still trapped in their car while the driver of the other car was not at the scene.

“We found four bottles of Don Julio alcohol. We also found a powder, which we suspect could be cocaine, and weed edibles in his vehicle,” Makgato said.

She added that a case of culpable homicide, reckless and negligent driving, and leaving the scene of an accident has been opened at the Tembisa South police station.
