- Two big cold fronts will bring huge 5.5-metre waves, snow and very cold weather across South Africa this week.
- Snow is expected in the Eastern Cape mountains with possible light snow in KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State by Wednesday.
South Africans must get ready for one of the worst winter weeks yet, as big cold fronts bring dangerous waves, freezing rain and even snow to parts of the country.
The South African Weather Service has issued serious warnings as strong weather moves across SA, bringing wind, huge waves, rain and snow in some places.
The first cold front hit the Western Cape coast on Monday morning, 4 August, bringing very strong winds and huge waves up to 5.5 metres high.
People near the sea, especially those fishing or walking on rocks, are in real danger of being washed away by the big waves.
On Tuesday, 5 August, the cold front will bring much colder weather and rain to many areas. Worcester and Beaufort West have a 60% chance of rain, while places like Springbok and East London have a 30% chance.
Thunder, strong winds and icy weather will hit some places.
Wednesday, 6 August, will see a second cold front arrive, making things much worse. Snow is expected in high areas of the Eastern Cape, especially around Mthatha, Aliwal North and Barkly East.
There’s also a chance of light snow in parts of KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State.
By the middle of the week, many areas will be very cold with a high risk of power cuts, dangerous roads and travel problems, especially in mountain and rural areas.
Weather experts say this could be one of the worst winter weather events of the year so far.
The mix of cold fronts, strong winds and snow makes this week very dangerous for anyone who has to be outside.
People living in shacks are especially at risk from strong winds that could damage their homes.
Emergency services are ready to help with weather problems across the country.
Farmers are also worried about their animals and crops, with very cold weather and strong winds that could harm livestock and winter crops.
