Six elephants escaped from South Africa’s Kruger National Park on Wednesday by crossing a river with low water levels.

A spokesperson for SANParks, Ike Phaahla, said: “We can confirm the escape of six elephants.”

He explained that the elephants got out because the water in the river was low at this time of year.

A helicopter was used to try to guide the elephants back, but a large group of local community members blocked their way, making the situation dangerous.

Law enforcement has been called to help, and once it is safe, they will try again to return the elephants to the park.

It is known that elephants that escape protected areas in Africa have sometimes been hunted by locals for meat.
