- Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine made a one-handed save in the 85th minute at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Tuesday night.
- The save secured a 2-0 win over AmaZulu and was Sipho’s 11th clean sheet in just 15 Betway Premiership matches.
Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine made a crucial save that sealed a 2-0 win over AmaZulu at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Tuesday night.
With Pirates leading 1-0 and only five minutes left, Sipho pulled off a stunning one-handed save in the 85th minute. The save killed any hopes of an AmaZulu comeback.
Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou praised Sipho after the match.
“People think he didn’t have too much to do, but the extra save that he had to make, he did it,” Ouaddou said.
“The save that he made at the end is what we are asking from the goalkeeper.”
Ouaddou said the save was crucial for the team’s confidence going forward.
“He made sure we did not concede and it allowed us to maybe go for the second goal. Maybe if they had scored, maybe it would not be the same game,” he said.
The clean sheet was Sipho’s 11th in just 15 Betway Premiership matches this season. That puts him level with Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen at the top of the charts.
AmaZulu did not give Sipho much trouble during the match. But when they did test him, he was ready.
The Moroccan coach gave credit to Sipho and the rest of the team for the win.
Pirates now face Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila in the Nedbank Cup on Sunday at 3pm. The match will be at the same Moses Mabhida Stadium.
