“Singer of alternative gospel” opens up about understanding her faith

Everson Luhanga

Thuso Mojatau, who calls herself the singer of the alternative gospel, has released her debut album, an artistic attempt to explain her understanding of religion through her lyrics.

The 10-track debut album is called Faith on the Flipside.

Thuso, who hails from Alexandra, Johannesburg, said her music career has been motivated by her upbringing within a Christian family.

“My grandmother was and still is a hardcore believer,” she said.

“As a young child growing up in the family, I always had unanswered questions. I asked my Sunday school teachers but I never got answers.”

She said that now that she is an adult, she is using her God-given talent to seek answers from the huge audience who listen, enjoy and respond to her music.

She is also driven to heal those who seek solace in her art.

“I am not in conflict with any faith,” she said.

“There is a lot of room to learn about faith if we ask questions, but most people don’t ask questions like I did when I was growing up.”

Known to her fans as Thuso Wa Sibini, Thuso’s album will take her listeners through an interesting fusion of house and dance beats while expressing an alternative way of viewing faith.

The self-taught musician has built a loyal audience through her style, which she calls Gospel House.

She has been the darling of many music fans who not only have faith but also want to dance and be merry.

“I don’t depress anyone. We praise God happily and we dance to the lyrics of faith,” she said.

“The album has happy and sad songs and songs that will make you dance, but they all encompass the beauty of faith. I want my fans to find the deepest happiness from the first to the last track,” said Thuso Wa Sibini.
