A former employee of the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) has come forward with allegations of being sexually assaulted by a colleague inside the Principality Stadium.
The claims follow a report last year that exposed sexism and misogyny within the WRU.
The victim, who has chosen to stay anonymous, spoke of two incidents that happened in 2019 and 2021 when she was assaulted by the same individual, The Daily Mail reported.
In one example, she described being forcibly held and assaulted in a cupboard.
“He was waiting in a cupboard in the office. He pulled the door shut and wedged me up against some of the stock and sexually assaulted me,” she told ITV Wales.
The period after these assaults left the victim feeling unsafe and anxious, leading to her eventual decision not to report the incidents to the police out of fear of disbelief.
Despite the lack of a police investigation, the victim did confront her attacker via message, receiving an apology.
The WRU’s culture of sexism and misogyny had already been criticised, leading to the resignation of former chief executive Steve Phillips and a detailed review of the organisation’s culture.
Abi Tierney, the new WRU chief executive, sent a formal apology to the victim and admitted that past HR policies were not good enough.
Efforts to improve the WRU’s approach to diversity and workplace safety are underway, including changes to the board to increase female representation.
“I want women to feel safe where they work and feel like they can speak up,” the victim said.
