Seven dead after taxi makes U-turn into Kariega bus

Seven people died after a minibus taxi crashed into an Algoa bus in Kariega on Monday morning.

The taxi was full of workers travelling from KwaNobuhle township to the Kariega central business district.

Eastern Cape Transport spokesperson Unathi Binqose said the taxi tried to make a U-turn in front of the oncoming bus. The bus hit the side of the taxi where the passengers were sitting.

There was only a driver on the bus when the crash happened.

Emergency services rushed to the scene to help. Medical teams treated 18 people. They found seven people dead.

Two people suffered serious injuries. The other passengers had less serious wounds. Ambulances took the injured people to nearby hospitals for more medical care.

Police and emergency teams stayed at the scene for some time. They worked to clear the wreckage and gather evidence.

Authorities have started an investigation to find out exactly what caused the crash. The names of the dead have not yet been released.
