Several videos of night burials shared on social media in Tanzania have led many to believe the government is hiding the country’s Covid-19 death toll.
The videos show funerals with people wearing personal protective equipment and few mourners.
The country reported 509 cases and 21 deaths by 14 May, then stopped reporting cases.
Tanzania has no strict lockdown. President Magufuli has advised people to go to church to be healed. “It cannot live in the body of Christ. It will burn instantly,” he has said.
The Ministry of Health says the night funerals have been discontinued.
“The government is hiding the number of deaths, this is 100% proven. How many [they’re hiding] is more difficult to say,” opposition member of parliament Zitto Kabwe told Al Jazeera.
