The KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner has deployed maximum security after four people were killed and eight others wounded in a shooting at a tavern in Sweetwaters, Pietermaritzburg on Saturday night.
The shooting is one of two to have rocked the nation over the weekend, with at least 15 people being massacred at a tavern in Soweto on the same night.
Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi said he has deployed members of Crime Intelligence, forensic experts and a tactical unit to form part of an investigation team led by the Provincial Organised Crime Investigation Unit.
“The team will be working around the clock to track down and bring to book those responsible for this shooting”, said General Mkhwanazi.
Two men are said to have carried out the attack, with two of the victims dying at the scene while a further two succumbed to their injuries in hospital.
So far no arrests have been made and police are still appealing to anyone who might have information to come forward and assist them.
SAPS spokesperson Nqobile Gwala confirmed that the police were investigating a case of murder and attempted murder.
“The docket has been transferred to the Provincial Organised Crime Unit who will take over the investigation,” said Gwala.

The killings have been condemned by the South African president Cyril Ramaphosa.
