A 16-year-old girl from Goso village outside EmaXasibeni formerly Mount Ayliff, took a taxi from  her village to Umtata last Saturday.

The taxi driver promised to take her to Umtata, but instead dropped her off midway in Mount Frere. There, she caught another taxi to Umtata.

But she never got home that night – and the next day she was found assaulted and raped at the Plaza shopping centre in Umtata.

Noloyiso Khafu, a social activist from Goso village, said the teenager was admitted to Nelson Mandela Hospital in Umtata.

“The child is a grade 11 learner from an Umtata school and she had come home for the weekend,” said Khafu.

“A case has been opened with Umtata SAPS. And we are still talking to taxi rank managers here to understand what happened.”

This is the second incident of rape in Goso village. Members of the community recently handed over a man to the police for allegedly raping his 12-year-old grandaughter.

The child escaped being repeatedly raped by her stepfather in Johannesburg and went to live with her grandmother in Goso village.

There, her grandfather turned into a monster who raped her after school on many occasions.

It was her class teacher who found her limping and began to investigate the matter and called the police.

On Tuesday, Khafu, as well as chiefs from surrounding villages and communities descended on Mount Ayliff Magistrates Court to oppose bail for the 54-year old alleged rapist.

The case was then postponed to 7 July because the recording machine at the court was faulty.
