A Mohamed Salah brace was enough to clinch Liverpool their first Premier League away victory of the season.
In what served as a must-win victory for both sides, it was the Egyptian striker that stood tall and earned Liverpool a 2-1 victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
It was only 15 minutes before Darwin Nunez found Salah inside the box and Spurs made the mistake of allowing him too much time on the ball before he slotted it home in the bottom right corner.
Liverpool had a deserved lead and that was doubled only minutes later when Tottenham defender Eric Dier made a mistake to put Salah through on goal, who delightfully chipped Hugo Lloris for his second.
It was the first time that Salah had found the back of the net in consecutive matches this season, taking his tally to six goals thus far.
Antonio Conte’s side looked rattled and being without star forward Heung-Min Son took a toll on their creativity up front.
But it was in the second half when Tottenham turned up a gear and found the back of the net through England striker Harry Kane with only 20 minutes to go.
Despite a late onslaught from the home side, it was not meant to be as the Liverpool defence remained resolute to hold onto their lead.
Spurs threw in everything but the kitchen sink as Liverpool desperately tried to hold on but a last-grasp stalemate was not on the cards.
It was the perfect response for Jurgen Klopp and his side after a shock 2-1 defeat to Leeds United last time out.
The defeat for Spurs means they remain in the top four, only three points ahead of Manchester United, who have a game in hand over the London club.
However, United found themselves on the end of a shock defeat in the second fixture on Sunday.
Aston Villa under their new manager Unai Emery claimed a 3-1 victory over the Red Devils after a magnificent display at home.
