Royalty reigns supreme at Dundee July

Sizwe Sibiya

KwaZulu-Natal is not only the best place in South Africa to spend your July, but its two iconic horse races and fashion events make it one of the best places to be in the world.

After missing two full years, the annual Dundee July returned on Saturday to claim its spot as the second biggest horse racing event in the province after the Durban July.

Jockey Doctor Mbatha and his horse Nxakanxaka came first and galloped away with the R250,000 cash prize and the bragging rights – until the race returns next July.

But last week as part of the build-up, the small town crowned its first ever Mr and Miss Dundee July, Mr Tumelo Molefe and Miss Mpilo Sibiya, who became ushers of the extravaganza.

With “Royalty” being the chosen theme for this year, most attendants decorated themselves in traditional attire and colourful traditional garments.

Saturday began with a street carnival in the heart of Dundee in the north of KZN, an event welcomed with excitement by locals.

An all-star line-up of Mzansi’s biggest artists showed up to entertain the spectators at 20 Lifestyle in Sibongile township, with artists like AKA, Nasty C and Igcokama Elisha sharing the stage.
