Romance in Harare: all it takes is a pint of lager and a pair of pigs’ balls

By Dalphine Tagwireyi

A new craze for pigs’ balls is sending men’s libidos into overdrive in Harare.

“Gearbox” is the street lingo to describe pig testicles, and they are believed by many to enhance men’s sexual libido and stamina.

Tendai Chisvo is a true believer that these love bites are an effective sex medicine.

“Your performance in bed will change and ladies will always come back to you, asking for more, because you will never go wrong with eating roasted ‘gearbox’,” the 28-year-old told Scrolla.Africa.

“Most men are not aware [of this] and those who have never eaten them should make time and try the delicacy, as they will crave for more and will definitely come back with a sexual testimony.”

Chisvo said that he enjoys eating gearboxes when he is drinking beer, as it’s a good combination because they also enhance his feelings and make him last longer in bed.

“Eating gearboxes is a cheaper way of enhancing ourselves as men, instead of using harmful pills that contain dangerous ingredients,” Chisvo added.

The myth has made Zimbabwean men jostle at places where gearboxes are sold, just for the enhancement of their sexual life.

Margret Chahwahwa, a 37-year-old former butchery worker from Mbare in Harare, said that when she first heard about the gearbox craze, she saw a lucrative business opportunity as  the butchery where she worked didn’t sell them.

“I then sourced the delicacy from a local abattoir and after two weeks my profit matched my salary, so I quit and focused on selling the pig testicles to food vendors,” she said.

“I am now convinced that they might be helping men do well in bed, because whenever vendors shout ‘gearbox’ on the streets, I always see men flocking to buy the whole day.”

Chahwahwa said that most men she has interacted with as she sells them the delicacy have told her that they are not just delicious, but are good for their performance in bed as well, which is a myth she has capitalised on.

“So, knowing exactly what men want, I am always scouting for pigs’ testicles in butcheries, to make my clients happy, as they sell more than any other type of meat,” she said.

But no-one has asked the pigs, which are one of the smartest animals on the planet, with the intelligence of a three-year-old child, what they think about it.

Zimbabweans are far from the first to seek sexual healing from the genitals of another animal. In Chinese traditional medicine, the balls of deer, tigers, seals, dogs and even beavers have long been used as sexual tonics.

Meanwhile, Westerners are also partial to a testicle or two. In parts of Europe and America, sheep and bull testicles are consumed as aphrodisiacs.

Scrolla is aware of no evidence to show that animal testicles improve sexual performance.
